Why it matters

Your back carries you every day.

Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons people stop doing what they enjoy. Long hours sitting, standing or lifting, stress and old injuries all add up.

For many common types of back pain, staying gently active is better than resting in bed. Madeleen finds out how you move, what triggers your pain and where you need more strength or mobility, then builds a programme to help you move with more confidence.

FAQ

Questions people often ask

Should I rest when my back hurts?
For most common back pain, short periods of rest are fine, but long bed rest usually makes things worse. Gentle movement within comfort tends to help. Seek urgent medical help if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or buttocks, new weakness in your legs, fever, or follows a fall or accident.
Do I need a scan before I start?
Not always. Many people with back pain don't need a scan. If Madeleen finds anything during your assessment that needs further investigation, she will refer you to your doctor.
Can exercise help with a disc problem?
In many cases, yes. A carefully chosen and progressed exercise programme can help you move with more confidence. Your programme is adapted to your symptoms and any advice from your doctor or surgeon.
I work shifts. Can you work around my roster?
Yes. Appointments start from 07:00 on weekdays, and your home programme is designed to fit around your shifts.
